HSA Receipt Apps Compared: Which One Should You Use?

A sheet of paper titled HSA Receipt Apps Compared with a comparison grid, on a wooden desk

Quick Answer

We make Shoebox, so keep that in mind as you read. On a yearly plan, Shoebox costs the most of the paid apps here. Which tool fits depends on what you need:

  • You forward receipts by email, you’re using your HSA as a long-term retirement account, and you’ll pay more for one plan with no expense limits: Shoebox, $60 a year.
  • You want iPhone and Android apps: HSA Tracker, the lowest starting price with phone apps, $0 to $27 a year.
  • You want a one-time payment on Apple devices: HSA Vault for iOS, $19.99 for lifetime Pro access.
  • You have an Apple household and want records in your own iCloud: HSA Monster, $49.99 a year.
  • You have few receipts and expect to stay with one HSA provider: the free tools in your provider’s app.
  • You want full control and don’t mind manual work: a folder and a spreadsheet.

We checked prices and features on each tool’s own website or App Store listing on November 3, 2026. Prices change, so confirm them before you buy. We haven’t tested our competitors’ paid plans, so this comparison relies on what they publish, and we haven’t independently verified their security or privacy claims. Other HSA receipt apps exist, and we didn’t review them all.

Two different products are called HSA Vault. One is an iOS app from Pensive Products LLC. The other is a web app at hsavault.app. They have different prices and store your data differently, and neither page mentions the other. The App Store also lists other apps with similar names, so check the developer before you buy.

HSA Monster’s site also shows a limited-time price of $24.99 for the first year. Account fees for provider tools, if any, depend on your provider and plan.

Features

“Not listed” means we didn’t see the feature on the product’s website or App Store listing, not that it’s definitely missing. We left provider tools out of this table because they vary.

Who Each One Suits

Shoebox

Suits you if you manage your HSA from a computer or your inbox, you’re using it as a long-term retirement account, and you want one plan with no tiers or expense limits.

You forward receipts to an email address or upload files on the web. AI reads the vendor, date, and amount, and you review the result. You can label each expense by family member, compare your projected balance with and without delayed reimbursement, and download each year’s reimbursements as a CSV along with their receipts. To record a withdrawal, you enter the amount and Shoebox applies it to your oldest eligible receipts, including partial amounts. That’s simple, but you can’t choose which receipt it applies to.

Skip it if price is your main concern or you want a native phone app. Shoebox has no native app, so on a phone you use the website or forward an email. It also has no two-factor sign-in, contribution tracking, shared spouse login, CSV import, or retailer integrations, and every expense has to start from a file or an email.

HSA Tracker

Suits you if you want a dedicated tool at a low price, you use Android, or you want a shared household view.

Its pricing page says the free plan includes email forwarding, a running total of what you can withdraw tax-free, and CSV and ZIP export. Paid plans add the annual tax report and raise the limits: $7 covers one person and 500 expenses, $17 covers six people and 2,000 expenses, and $27 has no limits. It also offers two-step sign-in, spouse access, CSV import of old expenses, and a price that’s locked for as long as you subscribe.

Watch out for the free plan’s 30-expense limit if you’re saving receipts for decades. Its help pages say the phone apps have no iPad layout yet and that some jobs, such as CSV import, are web-only. A June 2026 article on its site quotes higher prices than its pricing page, so go by the pricing page.

HSA Vault

The iOS app suits you if you’re one person on Apple devices who wants a one-time payment and no account. Its listing says processing happens on your device and backups live in your own iCloud. The free version gives you 5 AI scans a month, and Pro adds unlimited scans, PDF reports, and full exports.

Watch out for the requirements: the App Store lists iOS 26 or later. There’s no web or Android version listed. Records that live on your device depend on your backups, and a lifetime price depends on the app still being maintained years from now, so export regularly.

The web app suits you if you want a free tool that works on any device. It includes unlimited uploads and manual entry, with 25 AI scans a year, and Pro is $19 a year for unlimited AI extraction and audit reports.

Watch out for ownership: its homepage doesn’t name the company behind it. That’s worth looking into if you’re trusting a service with records for decades.

HSA Monster

Suits you if your household is all on Apple devices and you want both spouses adding receipts, with no account to sign in to. Records stay in your own iCloud rather than on the developer’s servers. If you stop subscribing, you can still view, edit, and export your data.

Watch out for the limits: there’s no Android or web version, and you need iOS or iPadOS 18.6 or later. Its site says the best scanning requires a device with Apple Intelligence enabled, and you may need more iCloud storage if you keep many receipts. At $49.99 a year, it costs more than every option here except Shoebox.

Free Tools in HSA Provider Apps

Suit you if you have few receipts, you reimburse yourself fairly soon, or you’d rather keep everything with your HSA. Examples:

Watch out for being tied to one account. You may move your HSA to a new provider someday, so ask what happens to uploaded receipts if you transfer or close the account, and check how you’d download them first. Features also vary by provider and sometimes by employer plan.

A Folder and a Spreadsheet

Suits you if you’re comfortable keeping your own system and you want no vendor involved. Use a cloud folder organized by year and a spreadsheet with the details from our guide to the records the IRS expects.

Watch out for upkeep: nothing reads your receipts or reminds you. It only works if you keep it up, keep a backup, and make sure someone can find it if they ever need to.

What to Check Before You Commit

You may need these records for decades, as our post on how long to keep HSA receipts explains, so the price matters less than whether you can get them back out.

  1. Test the export: Add a few receipts, export them, and open the files.
  2. Check what happens when you stop paying: Make sure you can still reach your records.
  3. Find out who runs it: A small app may not be around in 20 years, and that includes ours.
  4. Decide where your data should live: The tools here range from your own device or iCloud to a company’s servers, and from on-device AI to cloud AI.
  5. Keep your own backup: Download everything about once a year, whichever tool you use.

Every tool here can be tried for free, and neither HSA Tracker’s free plan nor Shoebox’s trial asks for a card, so you can test a few receipts before you commit.

Final Thoughts

The tool matters less than having the receipt when you need it. Whichever one you choose, test the export before you commit, so you know you can get your records back out.
